Coty, 1945

The makeup and fragrance company Coty was responsible for some of the most beautiful Christmas ads. Coty started using photography in their ads in the late Forties, which, while beautiful, just doesn’t capture the same charm as their illustrated ads. Note how their iconic round boxes of loose face powder are featured in every ad. You can still buy that powder today at CVS. Despite Coty’s decline as a prestige brand, I think their powder is one of the best out there, and a bargain compared to department store brands.

Coty ad, 1948. One of the earliest ones to feature photography rather than an illustration.

Coty ad from 1944, during World War II. Note how the woman's companion is in uniform.
